Saturday, June 24, 2006 no surprises in the WC,except that the Koreans fell at the last hurdle...poor things.unlike Japan who didn't quite stand a chance, they utterly went bust against the Swiss.now it's time for the even more scray stuff...full of nail biters and unwanted matchups...such as Spain-France and Portugal-Netherlands. looks like it's going to be showtime in Europe after the WC when the CHamps League qualifiers start....as always here's the draw (Northern Irish/Slovenians) vs Steaua--looks like I just need to see the UEFA semifinalists in the third round Levski Sofia vs (Georgians/Azerbaijanis)--another nobrainer...but then Levski has a higher chance of making it FC Zurich vs Austria Salzburg--this is a nail biter Djurgardens vs Ruzemberok--they can't be Artmedia,so looks like the Swedes are next up Debrecen vs (Luxembourgese/Macedonians)--another eternal 3rd rounder (Irish/Cypriots) vs Red Star Belgrade--one with quite a chance to make it Fenerfarce vs (Maltese/Faroese)--want to come to the 3rd round? Mlada Boleslav vs Valerenga-the Norwegians want to continue Rosenborg's legacy.see what happens in August (Armenians/Moldavians) vs Spartak--welcome back to the Champs League (Latvians/Kazakhs) vs Dinamo Kiev--no more Thuns...they'll be back too (Estonians/Icelanders) vs Legia Warsaw--a lucrative 3rd round beckons, with the tantalising prospect of Champs League ball in Warsaw Copenhagen vs (Finnish/Welsh)-another one who's going to fall in the 3rd round (Albanians/Lithuanians) vs Dinamo Zagreb--one more eternal 3rd rounder Hearts vs (Belarussians/Bosnians)--this is the Romanov effort at winning the Champs League at first try...funny nonetheless Tuesday, June 13, 2006 this is the miracle of miracles in world cup 2006 Australia 3 Japan 1-some freak misguided cross from Nakamura from Japan pinned the Aussies down for most of the time, but somehow someone remembered what to do and they scored 3 in 6 minutes...sheer class...Tim Cahill has 2 quick fire goals before Aloisi finishes off with a sweetie...as the commentator said...Japan did not know what had hit them Czech Republic 3 USA 0-Rosicky and Koller are the best of buddies here, but unfortunately for the US and Dortmund they won't ever see those pals again.so what happened was that the GIs got freaked out by both men.Koller went ouch,so he can't score 2 like his soon-to-be ex buddy Rosicky do Italy 2 Ghana 0-the Black Stars vs the Blue Stars.unfortunately Ghana didn't look like stars at all.couldn't be helped because whatever Essien does, they are still noobs.disclaimer:no offence intended, just that the Italians has too much experience in their ranks Yesterday...I forgot to update all these Portugal 1 Angola 0-Pauleta is not the star of the show, neither it's Luis Figo, even if they collaborated for a goal.somehow Cristiano Ronaldo managed to get Scolari pissed off by his pretty boy show-boating antics...needless to say the pissed Scolari subbed the pissed Ronaldo off and the Angolans got away with little more than a goal conceded and some sort of unexpected pride.the punters who assumed Portugal going on a rampage got hit hard on this one Mexico 3 Iran 1-it's hard not to admire goalie Sanchez's courage, least of all to play a few days after his dad's funeral.touching that his Iranian counterpart offered his condolences, and his dad would have wished he'd play Serbia 0 Holland 1-Robben does it...but in effect they got slammed too because the total footballers got one last housekeeping chore to do before they meet Argentina, and that's their team spirit.Drogba lie in wait too,so sometimes your spirit may be the reason which you fell Argentina 2 Cote d'Ivoire 1-Drogba behaves, and scores, and Saviola goes ballistic.not a bad effort from a noob whatsoever, but I think I miss Nigeria,Cameroon and Senegal more than missing Ghana and Ivory Coast Saturday, June 10, 2006 England 1 Paraguay 0-There are 11 players on the pitch.the 12th player is the fans...and the 13th player is a jinxed character from the opposing team who becomes the scapegoat when they scored an own goal by the way,it looks like England didn't quite penetrate the Paraguay defence, although the early own goal by Gamarra made matters easier, although they might have to be very cautious next time if they don't want a Kelvin Jack in the Box next time round Germany 4 Costa Rica 2-this is one cracker of a opening match.by 15 minutes it's 1-1,a spectacular shot by Lahm(Stuttgart) and Wanchope's(ex Man C) alleged offside and Klose(Bremen) had a double for his birthday yesterday, but what stole the show was Fring's(ex Bayern) scoring at his old home,a even more powerful rocket that rocked Munich all over Poland 0 Ecuador 2-Magic cockout and then the Poles look absolutely disappointing, floored by 2 shots from the highlanders today England-Paraguay-this is the match all Singaporeans would have been talking about, amid all the news reports that Rooney can make it for the later stages...but for now they would have to learn to cope like Germany.with 2 Bayern dangermen and a Bremen toughie at the frontline,it's gonna be very very tough for the guys who aren't so familiar with South American style defence or German style executioners efficiency.most people would have said England win,but I'd rather have a 1-0 or 1-1 draw...i might be called loco but that's life Sweden-Trinidad and Tobago-for one thing,Trinidad won't be like Treviso.Sweden's first choice goalie got concussed by a shot from his Rennes team mate,so the Soca Warriors could take advantage of any weak keeper, and if their Swedish efficiency fails them...we might imagine how punters feel.2-1 Sweden given the fact there will be no pushovers in the world cup P.S:Singaporeans, stand up for Shamsul who will be officiating.Proud to be a Singaporean..and a England fan Argentina-Cote d'Ivoire-apparently,Argentina isn't quite as strong as made out on paper, but I think Pekerman's emphasis on youth would backfire...he isn't like Klinnsmann who evolves with his team...he's one traditional guy who seems as if he isn't with the younger generation. In fact some guys who play in Moscow should be included ahead of a few others...and with the Elephants being quite unpredictable, especially with Drogba, just look for a 1-1 draw or even a 2-1 win for the guys who score first...i think it'd be Drogba.he won't be diving this time...though so rest assured Thursday, June 08, 2006 yawn, with the Chelski Army business over,it seems like off season for me.nah this time round it's 1 day to the World Cup and it looks like I'm going to die from a deluge of 64 matches, surely not helped by the fact that I've got PPV activated at the 11th hour this weekend... Germany-Costa Rica (0000 on Friday)-the only thing working against Germany is the fact that they are so unconfident of themselves,as is the German public.this would have worked for the underdogs if not for the fact that they can't play against Europeans for nuts.0-0 for the Germans would have been workable, just watch out Poland-Ecuador-I'm fairly familiar with the Poles, and although I don't think they would copy the same formation of 1978,when they got 3rd,I think Magic Zurawski would be firing the Poles through.forget about Ecuador this time, because mountain or not they can't hold on against some of the best stuff from Euro footy.the only weak link is the goalie, who would be adequately replaced by another Hoop(it's obvious which team I was talking about) |
